Elinor Ostromová
První ženou, která získala prestižní tzv. Nobelovu cenu za ekonomii, je americká profesorka politických věd na Indiana University v Bloomingtonu ve státě Indiana, která ani nebyla ekonomkou v úzkém slova smyslu.
Profesorka Elinor Ostromová (roz. Awan) se narodila dne 7. srpna 1933 v Los Angeles v době hospodářské krize do skromných rodinných poměrů. Cestu ke studiu politologie ve značné míře ovlivnil její budoucí životní partner Vincenc Ostrom, s nímž se seznámila a sblížila během svých studií. Almu mater Ostromové představuje UCLA, kde roku 1954 získává B.A., 1962 M.A. a v roce 1965 pak Ph.D. v oboru politických věd. S Kalifornskou universitou jsou také spojeny počátky jejího výzkumu a start vědecké dráhy, spojené se správou obecných zdrojů (CPRs).
E. Ostromová za své výzkumné kariéry působila v mnoha zemích světa, jako např. v Nigerii, Keni, Indii, Nepálu, Austrálii, a také v Evropě – v Polsku a Německu.
Byla držitelkou mnoha ocenění, např. v roce 2009 získala např. Elazar Distinguished Federalism Scholar Award, ve stejném roce Jonathan M. Tisch Prize for Civic Engagement Research, v roce 2008 Galbraith Award, v roce 2008 získává Honorary Doctorate na McGill University v Montrealu, v roce 2007 Honorary Doctorate Humboldt University, Berlin, atd.
Ostromová byla oceněna za příspěvek k otázce veřejných zdrojů a společného majetku a svými teoriemi změnila pohled na správu veřejných statků. O udělenou tzv. Nobelovu cenu za ekonomii se v roce 2009 dělí s profesorem Oliverem Williamsonem z University of California. Její bezprostřední reakcí na udělení ceny bylo dle vlastních slov překvapení a šok.
Časopis Time ji zařadil mezi stovku nejvlivnějších světových osobností v roce 2012. Toho roku 12. června pak Elinor Ostromová umírá v americkém Bloomingtonu ve věku 78 let.
